Trshare - TRIUMF Public File Server
Trshare is public file server for all TRIUMF users. It can be accessed from any of the following platforms;
- Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP
- Linux/Unix
- MacOS
The intention of trshare is two fold;
1. Store & Share files
To act as a central place that all TRIUMF users can store and share files. Presently, many people are using the TRIUMF email server, trmail, for this purpose. Trmail is an e-mail server, not a file server. People who distribute large files through email and store them in their e-mail folders are the primary source of the poor performance often seen on trmail.
Trshare has been setup to help ease the burden of using trmail to distribute large files, often these are large and multiple copies of files.
2. Public web server for all users
In addition to storing and distrubuting files, trshare is also a public web server. Every TRIUMF user who has an e-mail account has been given a trshare account. I directory public_html has already been setup for each user in their account, any files placed in this directory can be accessed from the web via the url http://trshare.triumf.ca/~username, where username is the username that has been assigned to you when your e-mail account was created.
It is hoped & encouraged that all those people who currently have web directories on ibm00 (previously lin01/lin01a) and alph04 will migrate their web directories to trshare in the future.
If you have a TRIUMF e-mail account than you already have a trshare account, however you must activate it before you can start using it. To activate your account on trshare.triumf.ca account, go to https://trmail.triumf.ca/authcgi/webuser login with your TRIUMF e-mail username and password and select the option that says Activate account on Public File Server (trshare.triumf.ca)
Trshare can be used to store files you wish to make available to the web (provided they conform to the TRIUMF acceptable use policy). It can also be used to store other files you wish to share with other TRIUMF users.
Trshare can NOT be used to make archived backups of entire systems or data sets.
Linux/Unix users
Access to trshare for Linux/Unix users is done through NFS. The public machines alph04 and IBM00 have already been setup to access to trshare. For user mcdonald on ibm00 to put files on trshare simply copy/move files to /triumfcs/trshare/mcdonald.
If you manage your own Linux/Unix machine and it has been setup according to the instructions provided by TRIUMF computing services http://www.triumf.ca/internal/ then you should have a file called /etc/auto.triumfcs on your machine, simply add the following line to /etc/auto.triumfcs file
trshare -rw,hard,intr trshare:/public
There is no need to restart any service or reboot. You should be able to simply go to /triumfcs/trshare from your machine.
Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP users
You need to activate your trshare access by going to Mail Settings/Change Password and changing or confirming your password.Access to trshare is through the windows network neighbourhood or Network Places. If your computer is a member of the TRIUMF domain simply browse to the TRIUMF domain, look for the machine trshare. If your computer is NOT member of the TRIUMF domain, then click on Start Choose Run... in the "Open:" box type: \\trshare\public and click on the Ok button. depending on the username/password you have used to logon to your local desktop machine you may or may not be asked to enter a username/password. If you are asked for a username/password enter your trmail username and password. If you are successful you can now drag and drop files into your folder on trshare.
